What’s the deal with Carrier Oils?

Carrier Oils

  • Carrier Oils are naturally obtained from the fatty portion of a plant (usually the seed, kernel or nuts) and have a subtle or neutral smell.
  • “Carry”-er oils make an excellent medium for dilution as they assist the application of EO on the skin and the absorption of the therapeutic elements of EO into the body.
  • CO do not evaporate as quickly (less volatile) compared to EO.
  • CO are important especially when using EO with children or when new to oils. Some oils can be “hot” so you will want to use a carrier oil with them
  • CO become rancid over time. EO does not.

Carrier Oils for the Face

The most important thing to look out for when considering a carrier oil ESPECIALLY when using it for the face is it’s COMEDOGENIC rating.  Comedogenic = tending to cause blackheads by blocking the pores of the skin.  Therefore, coconut oil, which is very popular and good for almost everything else is actually a very big NO for the face.

Two other things to consider when choosing your carrier oil is the ABSORPTION RATE and your SKIN TYPE
