DIY Essential Oil-Infused Salt Dough Ornaments

(Last Updated On: August 27, 2017)

Salt dough is perfect for kids young and old.  It is extremely versatile, simple and inexpensive to make.  On top of that, salt dough is a great sensory play item for kids – with a craft in mind, or just to twist, pull, and mold the dough.

Essential oil-infused salt dough ornaments and gift tags is a wonderful way to add that personal touch to your presents.  And you can really personalise it by adding essential oils like we did.  These ornaments can be given as a gift tag on a present, later transformed into an aromatherapy diffuser and ornament to be enjoyed. Or presented as a little ornamental gift on it’s own.

This is what we did pre-Xmas 2015 and I have friends who still have their gift tags to date (2017).

You will need:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water {add this in slowly because you may not need it all}
  • Your favorite essential oil(s)
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baking sheet
  • String/Ribbon
  • Paint (optional)

What to do:

1.  Pre-heat oven to 250 degrees Celcius.

2.  Mix flour and salt in a bowl.  Then stir in water until smooth.

3.  Using your hands, knead until all ingredients are well-incorporated and dough is smooth.  (If mixture is too dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time until dough comes together)

Allow a little play time

4.  Lightly flour countertop. Roll out dough until it’s approximately ¼ inch thick.

5.  Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place on cookie sheet  lined with parchment paper.

6.  Using a drinking straw or toothpick, make a hole in top of ornament for threading string.

7.  Place in oven until hard, approximately 1 hour, until completely dry.  Once hard, remove from oven and cool.

8.  At this stage, ornaments may be painted or decorated. String with ribbon, and your ornaments are done!

9.  Add essential oils by placing one drop on each ornament and allow it to soak in.

Note: Baking the ornament will turn the dough slightly brown and may “puff” up some of the ornaments. If you prefer, you can also air dry the ornaments for 2–3 days to help the ornaments remain white and flat.

  • Add 5-10 drops of your favorite Essential Oil directly to the dough before rolling it out and cutting. Your house will smell AMAZING when it bakes.
  • There are multiple ways to decorate.  You can stamp on an image or paint it.  Either way, everyone will love and adore this homemade gift.
